There are 4 steps in the process of starting classes and becoming a Freshman in August, 2023.
RECOMMENDATIONS*Your current 8th grade teachers, who have you in class and know you best, will make recommendations about courses for next year.
PLACEMENTOnce recommendations are made and reviewed by the students, parents and/or guardians, students are placed in those courses.
ENROLLMENTThe enrollment process includes creating the master schedule by enrolling students in course sections. This process takes about 3-5 months to complete.
REGISTRATIONThis is an annual process, through ParentVUE, that officially registers a student for the next academic year. Annual registration is required for ALL students.
*Recommendations are an important part of this process. Each year, our 8th-grade colleagues provide excellent recommendations that give students the best opportunity to be successful in a challenging environment. Neuqua Valley does not use a tracking system. The courses or levels students are placed in Freshman year are not a "track" they must stay in for following years. Click HERE for more information on the Course Selection Process.
When choosing courses, it's important to look at 4 priorities over the 4-year high school experience:
CREDITSStudents qualify for graduation and a diploma by accumulating credits over their 4 years: 1.0 credits for a full-year class and .5 credits for a semester. Students work with their School Counselor to ensure they have the proper credits.
COLLEGE AmbitionNot all students are college-bound but taking college-prep (CP) coursework provides every student the opportunity for ongoing education after high school. That might be a year after graduation, or 10 years after graduation.
CAREER OrientationAll students have interests and talents that help steer them towards a future career. This includes college-bound students who choose an area of study. Our role is to help students discover those interests and talents by supporting their course selections.
CREDENTIALSAs students progress through high school, they will have opportunities to earn credentials such as AP College Credit, Dual Credit and other certifications and licenses in their high school courses.
The High School Course Guidebook is a reference guide to all courses, including course titles, descriptions, credits, and prerequisites. We strongly encourage families to review the Guidebook in order to make informed decisions during the course selection process.
